Now it’s time to enjoy some physical activity. The first half of the course has focused on reading content about fitness and nutrition. The next three units will start you on your Fitness for Sports and Recreation exercise program (FSR exercise program) which will go for the next twelve weeks. You will be submitting three assignments every four weeks during the next three units (keep track of what week you are on once you start). The logs are found in the appendix (you will need to print multiple copies to cover all twelve weeks of exercise). The first thing you will do is assess your physical fitness levels using the Presidential Fitness Tests.
To assess your fitness levels prior to starting your FSR exercise program, you will complete five simple fitness tests in each of the next three units.
The physical fitness tests we use in this course are taken from the President’s Challenge (www.presidentschallenge.org, site now defunct). The five tests include: the endurance run/walk, shuttle run, curl-ups (or partial curl-ups), pull-ups (or right angle push-ups), and the V-sit (or sit and reach). These tests will be downloaded on the next page. If you have any health problems or concerns, make sure you get your doctor’s permission before doing any test.
All five tests are to be completed multiple times during the course. These tests are used to set baseline fitness scores and to show improvement through rest of the course. The tests go in this order: When you finish each fitness test, record your answers on the form found in Appendix C (all forms are found in the links below).
